81. Keyword Planning: Using SEM Rush to Get Keyword Ideas from Your Competitors
SEMRUSH IS GOOD FOR 2 MAIN AREAS:
- 1.) Keyword Ideas
- 2.) Competitor Analysis
- What are your competitors doing?
- Which keywords are bringing in a high % of their search traffic to your sit.
- Who they actually are, and what paid keywords you actually share.
For a potential client - You send them a sheet that says these are the 200 keywords your competitors are bidding on and we're going to do as best as we can to get a higher place in the auction, bid more efficiently, create better landing pages for these keywords.

We want to figure out
1.) What search terms related to office chairs is staples bidding on?
2.) What percentage of their overall traffic is coming from those search terms and keywords?
We go to the Paid Search Report
- We see 71,000 keywords. You can hover on each one, and it will let you see exactly what your competitor's ads have been?
- Traffic % and Cost %
- Gives us a sense of how much they are getting from that keyword, and how valuable this keyword is for them.
- Go to Filter
- Add contains chair. We can add more filters as we go.
- We see a lot of them have the word Staples in them. If I'm running a Competitor campaign, then great, but we're here right now to find new keyword ideas and start thinking about themes.
- Exclude keywords that include staples.
- We're down to 130 keywords
- Swivel office chair - we don't have tat yet - so we select it

- Negative Keywords, Positive Keywords, Themes
